Changelog

Every Readdown release and what changed. Readdown updates itself, so you're always on the latest one.

  1. 1.19 October 2026
    • A table of contents for long documents: ⌥⌘T or View > Show Table of Contents (thanks @skykeyjoker)
    • Back (⌘[) and Forward (⌘]) after following a link within a document (thanks @stormc)
    • Window tabs: merge windows into tabs, and with the tab bar showing, new files open as tabs
    • Install with Homebrew: brew install --cask nataliarsand/tap/readdown
    • Jumping from the table of contents or Find into a folded section opens it; the fold arrow is easier to click and works from the keyboard
    • Reduce motion in macOS settings turns off smooth scrolling and animations
    • The "file updated" notice appears only when an open file actually changes
  2. 1.18.2 October 2026
    • Stricter handling of document content in the app and in Quick Look. Security fixes ship on their own, as soon as they're ready.
  3. 1.18.1 October 2026
    • A small update: safer handling of links in documents
    • Updated the built-in updater
  4. 1.18 October 2026
    • Copy the file's path from the folder button, the File menu, or ⌥⌘C (thanks @troelskn)
    • YAML front matter at the top of a file shows as a code block (thanks @troelskn)
    • View → Appearance lets you read in Light or Dark regardless of macOS (thanks @csbertran)
    • Links to other apps, like codex:// or vscode://, open after a confirmation that names the app (thanks @justin808)
    • Holding ⌘ while scrolling no longer zooms; pinch or ⌘+ and ⌘− still do (thanks @max-jardetzky)
    • Long labels in Mermaid flowcharts wrap instead of being cut off (thanks @skykeyjoker)
    • Header buttons show tooltips with their shortcuts, confirmations appear centred in the header, and links are checked more strictly
  5. 1.17 September 2026
    • Copy keeps its formatting: paste into Google Docs, Word, or Mail and your headings, lists, tables, and links survive, while plain-text editors still get raw Markdown
    • Base64-embedded images (data:image/...) now render instead of showing as raw text (thanks @javafanboy)
    • Equations render when you print or export a PDF
    • Code blocks sit on a deeper background and long lines wrap instead of hiding off the edge
    • Cmd+F reopens the search box with your last search selected (thanks @Christopher-Crawford)
    • UTF-32 files open correctly, and closing a window with the red button no longer risks a crash
  6. 1.16 July 2026
    • Math rendering: inline and block LaTeX equations, fully offline (thanks @adivijaykumar)
    • Collapsible headings: fold any section away with the chevron in the margin
    • Sharper Markdown: nested and mixed lists, setext (=== / ---) headings, reference-style links and images, and clickable bare URLs
    • A link to another local Markdown file now reveals it in Finder, so you can open it from there
    • Stronger, safer handling of raw HTML inside documents
  7. 1.15 July 2026
    • A cleaner reading view with a floating header: the file name and quick actions (copy, find, show in Finder) tuck into the title bar
    • Copy the whole document, or any single code block, to the clipboard in one click (code-block copy thanks to @jantomec)
    • Optional, anonymous usage stats to guide what gets improved, off unless you opt in
    • Opening a file no longer reopens your entire previous session on top of it
    • Mermaid diagrams re-theme instantly on light and dark switch, and printing or exporting to PDF from dark mode now comes out light
    • Ordered lists keep their starting number, and bold or italic spanning a wrapped line inside a list item now render (thanks to @troelskn)
  8. 1.14.1 June 2026
    • Heading anchor links now match GitHub's slug convention for headings with stripped punctuation (e.g. # Foo — bar produces foo--bar, not foo-bar) — thanks @ReubenCowell
  9. 1.14 June 2026
    • Paragraph lines beginning with # followed by a digit no longer freeze the app
    • Fenced code blocks inside list items render as code blocks again
    • Heading anchor links scroll to the target instead of being silently cancelled

    • Readdown no longer hangs at launch when the previous session's documents have moved or been deleted
